Varicoceles usually occur due to poorly functioning valves within the veins leading to the pooling of blood and the swelling of a small group of veins known as the pampiniform plexus. This leads to decreased sperm production and quality which is how reduced fertility occurs.
Symptoms of a varicocele
The majority of cases are symptom-less, however, in some cases patients may experience:
- Scrotal (testicular) Pain or ache
- Infertility
- The appearance of varicose veins on the scrotum (more often on the left side)
- Relief of pain upon lying down
- Enlargement of the veins from time to time
Remedy for Varicocele:
I have gone into detail on the various clinically-tested herbal remedies in my article “Varicocele Natural Treatment“.
L-Carnitine
L-Carnitine is an amino acid that has a demonstrated numerous benefits for a long list of health problems such as Diabetes Type 2, Hepatitis Encephalopathy, High Cholesterol, Peripheral Artery Disease, Metabolic Syndrome, Hyperthyroidism, and more. Its also shown a lot of promise for treating male sexual issues such as low sperm count and erectile dysfunction.
L-Carnitine for Varicoceles
In a clinical trial, supplementation with L-Carnitine was found to be just as effective as a surgical intervention known as a varicocelectomy for improving semen parameters such as motility, volume, and morphology. The study also suggested that L-carnitine may be used as an alternative to surgery (see study).
L-Carnitine Side-Effects
Generally, L-Carnitine is considered to be safe and well tolerated.
In some cases, people may experience:
- A fishy odor from breath or sweat
- Gastrointestinal discomfort (Mostly nausea or a tummy ache)
- Dry Mouth
How To Use L-Carnitine
In the study referenced above, patients were given 250mg, four times a day. In other studies, doses of up to 2000mg a day were used. Some isolated studies used higher doses of up to 6000mg a day.
The L-Carnitine I prefer to use, it this one.
However, I highly recommend using L-Carnitine with the supervision of a doctor.
