What is Erectile Dysfunction (ED)?

Erectile Dysfunction, sometimes referred to as impotence, is a condition in which a man consistently experiences difficulty with achieving or maintaining an erection sufficient for sexual activity. It affects up to 52% of men aged 40–70, however, it can occur at an earlier age as well. ED can impact psychological, relational, and physical health. As per the current statistics, approximately 150 million men worldwide experience this condition. In this article, I go over the symptoms, causes, types and remedies for erectile dysfunction that are clinically-tested.

Erectile dysfunction remedies range from herbs, supplements, and lifestyle changes. Of course, as mentioned earlier, it is important to concurrently manage the underlying cause of ED while also using remedies that can directly stimulate erections. Here are some remedies that can help manage the symptoms of ED:

Herbs & Supplements

Tribulus Terrestris

Tribulus Terrestris is an Ayurvedic herb with a long history of use for sexual related disorders in both males and females. It has been found to improves erectile function and libido and appears to do so by enhancing androgen receptor sensitivity and nitric oxide production. A 2018 study in The Aging Male found significant improvement in IIEF scores after 12 weeks of 750 mg/day (see study).

Tongkat Ali (Eurycoma longifolia)

Tongkat Ali is a popular remedy for boosting testosterone and improving erectile function. It is found in almost various of testosterone boosting supplements and formulas. A 2012 study published in Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine showed improved erectile function and serum testosterone in 76 men over 1 month (see study). Tongkat Ali also appears to reduce cortisol – a stress hormone that has the ability to hamper circulatory and metabolic health when chronically elevated.

L-Arginine + Pycnogenol

L-Arginine is an amino acid that increases nitric oxide thus enhancing blood flow. Its commonly used in sports supplements for supporting blood for the purpose of building muscle and getting a bigger pump when lifting weights. Pycnogenol is a compound extracted from Pine Bark that has also demonstrated significant circulation boosting benefits. In a 2003 study (Journal if Sex & Marital Therapy), administration of L-arginine and Pycnogenol resulted in significant improvement in sexual function in men with ED. It is also important to note that no side-effects were experienced (see study).
