Thrombocytopenia is a condition characterized by a low platelet count in the blood. Platelets, also known as thrombocytes, are made in the bone marrow and play a vital role in blood clotting. This is essential to stop bleeding.
Having a low platelet count can lead to excessive bleeding and other potential complications.
Thrombocytopenia can occur for many reasons and to effectively correct the condition, the underlying problem must be treated.
Causes of Thrombocytopenia
Thrombocytopenia has several potential causes, such as:
- Bone marrow disorders such as leukemia or aplastic anemia.
- Autoimmune conditions like idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) where the immune system attacks the platelets.
- Medications such as heparin, can induce thrombocytopenia by interfering with platelet production or function.
- Viral infections such as dengue fever, HIV, and hepatitis can reduce platelet levels.
- Pregnancy can sometimes result in thrombocytopenia, typically during the third trimester.
- Excessive alcohol consumption can impair the production of platelets in the bone marrow.
- Nutritional deficiencies of vitamin B12 or folate can also result in this condition.
Types of Thrombocytopenia
- Immune Thrombocytopenia (ITP): In this condition, the immune system destroys platelets, lowering counts.
- Thrombotic Thrombocytopenic Purpura (TTP): A rare disorder causing clots in small blood vessels thus reducing the number of available platelets.
- Drug-induced Thrombocytopenia
- Inherited Thrombocytopenia: Genetic conditions such as Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome can result in thrombocytopenia.
- Secondary Thrombocytopenia: This is where the condition is caused by other diseases such as cancer, infections, or autoimmune conditions.
Symptoms of Thrombocytopenia
Thrombocytopenia symptoms can vary depending on the severity of the condition:
- Bruising easily with minimal or no trauma. The bruises may sometimes be fairly large.
- Frequent nosebleeds
- Bleeding gums with prolonged bleeding.
- Petechiae: Small, red or purple dots on the skin caused by bleeding under the surface.
- Fatigue
- Excessive bleeding during menstruation
- Blood in urine or stool -> This is usually a sign of internal bleeding and is a very severe symptom which needs urgent medical attention.
Diagnosis of Thrombocytopenia
Diagnosing thrombocytopenia typically involves:
- Platelet counts can be measured with a Complete Blood Count (CBC).
- In some cases, a blood smear may be done to assess the appearance of platelets.
- Bone marrow biopsy may be needed when trying to identify the cause of low platelet production.
- For immune-related thrombocytopenia, an anti-platelet antibody test may be done.
Natural Remedies for Thrombocytopenia
There are various natural solutions for thrombocytopenia, however, it is also essential to address the underlying condition which is causing the low platelet count as well.
Here are some clinically-tested remedies for boosting platelet count:
Papaya Leaf Extract
Papaya leaf extract has been well studied for its potential to increase platelet counts, especially in cases of dengue fever (see study). It appears to support platelet production and reduce the destruction of platelets.
A product named “Platenza” by Himalaya is a high-quality Papaya leaf extract supplement that can be considered.
Wheatgrass
Wheatgrass is a popular remedy for blood disorders and appears to enhance red blood cell and platelet production due to its high chlorophyll content, which is structurally similar to hemoglobin. In a clinical trial, Wheatgrass juice was found to prevent thrombocytopenia in patients undergoing chemotherapy (see study).
Tinospora cordifolia (Guduchi)
Guduchi, an Ayurvedic herb, is known for its immune-boosting properties and and has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing platelet production in patients with Dengue fever (see study).
In my practice, I commonly use Guduchi together with Papaya Leaf Extract as I have found this to be highly effective and also supported by clinical research (see study).
These natural solutions for thrombocytopenia, while highly effective and generally considered safe, should be used with the guidance of a doctor.
