Chronic Fatigue Syndrome Remedies

What is Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS)?

  • Chronic Fatigue Syndrome is also known as Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (ME/CFS)
  • It is a complex and severely debilitating condition characterized by extreme fatigue that does not improve even after adequate rest.
  • This condition typically impacts a person’s daily functioning, physical activity, memory, and concentration.

In this article, I will be going over the symptoms, causes, complications, and remedies for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

Common Symptoms of CFS

  • Persistent fatigue that lasts over 6 months
  • Post-exertional malaise (PEM) – symptoms that get worse after physical or mental exertion
  • Unrefreshing sleep and potentially insomnia
  • Cognitive issues such as brain fog and difficulty concentrating or remembering
  • Muscle and joint pain
  • Frequent sore throats or swollen lymph nodes
  • Dizziness
  • Orthostatic Intolerance
  • Headaches

Possible Causes and Risk Factors

  • Viral infections such as Epstein-Barr virus, human herpesvirus-6
  • Immune system dysfunction
  • Mitochondrial abnormalities affecting energy production
  • Hormonal imbalances (adrenal and thyroid hormones)
  • Chronic stress
  • Trauma
  • Genetics
  • Environmental toxins such as heavy metal exposure

Complications of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

  • Depression and anxiety
  • Social isolation
  • Occupational disability
  • Poor quality of life
  • Increased risk of cardiovascular disease due to reduced physical activity
  • Gastrointestinal issues (often seen with IBS)

Diagnostic Approach

  • There is no test to confirm CFS
  • It is typically diagnosed by exclusion. Therefore the diagnostic process may be a bit lengthy.
  • Diagnostic tests to rule out other conditions:
    • Thyroid function tests to check for hypothyroidism
    • Cortisol levels to check for Addison’s Disease.
    • CBC to rule out anemia
    • CRP/ESR to rule out inflammation
    • Sleep study (in some cases)
  • Tilt-table testing for orthostatic intolerance

Lifestyle and Self-Management Tips

  • Pacing activity to avoid post-exertional malaise
  • Maintain consistent bedtime, avoid screens before sleep
  • Follow a diet rich in whole foods, low sugar, anti-allergenic
  • Engage in gentle exercise such as yoga, stretching, walking (based on tolerance)
  • Manage stress by using techniques such as meditation, breathing exercises, counseling

Remedies for Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome remedies range from herbs, nutrients, and dietary intervention. Keep in mind that these remedies need to be used with the supervision of your doctor as well as a professional whom specializes in these types of remedies such as an Ayurvedic doctor. Here are a few evidence-based remedies that may be able to provide significant relief:

1. Acetyl-L-Carnitine

Acetyl-L-Carnitine is an amino acid with several benefits related to supporting mitochondrial energy production. It does this by helping transport fatty acids into mitochondria for ATP synthesis. In a 2004 randomized study in Neuropsychobiology it was found that acetyl-L-carnitine significantly improved mental fatigue and cognitive function in patients with CFS (see study 1 & 2).

2. Rhodiola Rosea (Golden Root)

Rhodiola is a popular adaptogen that enhances physical and mental stamina. It is particularly useful for reducing stress-induced fatigue and cortisol levels. In a 2012 open-label trial published in Phytomedicine, Rhodiola supplementation resulted in statistically significant reduction in fatigue scores within one week (see study)

3. French Oak Wood Extract

Derived from Quercus robur, this herbal extract is rich in ellagitannins with antioxidant and mitochondrial-enhancing properties. A 2014 study in Panminerva Medica found that supplementation with French Oak Wood Extract resulted in significant reduction in fatigue, oxidative stress, and improved mood after 4 weeks. Patients also had improved liver enzyme balance and less mental exhaustion (see study).
