Back Pain Remedies

Back pain remedies include herbs, supplements, creams, therapies, and back-specific exercises.

Curcumin + Boswellia

Curcumin and Boswellia are natural anti-inflammatory agents that have demonstrated their ability to reduce pain in a multitude if conditions making them the perfect remedies for back pain. Curcumin is the active compound in turmeric and possesses potent anti-inflammatory properties. Studies show Curcumin & Turmeric reduce inflammation and alleviates pain in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, headaches, and several other conditions. Boswellia is a medicinal herb that has been found to also treat rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis and is used for pain management in Ayurvedic Medicine.

When it comes to back pain, the combination of Turmeric (the source of Curcumin) and Boswellia was found to significantly relieve acute lower back in patients within 76 minutes (see study)

It is important to note that Curcumin must be taken with a bio-availability enhancer such as ginger, black pepper, or piperine (the active compound in black pepper) – this ensures proper absorption of Curcumin. Additionally, a fat is required, therefore taking it after a meal can be advantageous. Luckily, there are several Curcumin supplements that already contain black pepper and a source of fat. Additionally, there are supplements that contain both Curcumin and Boswellia.

White Willow Bark

White Willow Bark is an age-old natural remedy for pain. It contains a compound known as salicin which has similar effects to that of aspirin. The difference is it takes a bit longer than aspirin to start relieving pain, however, it tends to last longer in its effect.

In a clinical trial, patients experiencing back pain whom took White Willow Bark Extract (Salicin) experienced significant pain relief in comparison to the placebo group (see study)

Keep in mind that White Willow Bark and its active compound Salicin have blood thinning properties and should be used with caution and under the supervision of a health professional.

Capsaicin Cream

Capsaicin is a compound derived from chili peppers that alleviates pain by desensitizing nerve endings. This compound is added to creams in order to create a product that can help relieve pain. In clinical studies, the use of Capsaicin creams was found to relieve back pain due to inter-vertebral disc herniation (see study) as well as lumbosacral radiculopathy and neuropathic axial lower back pain (see study)

Heat and Cold Therapy

Alternating between heat and cold packs can help to manage pain and inflammation. Cold packs reduce swelling and numb pain, while heat improves blood flow and helps to relax muscles. This combination is highly effective for managing back pain. Typically, a patient is recommended to apply ice packs for the first 48 hours, and then followed by heat therapy for 20 minutes at a time.

Yoga and Stretching

Yoga is known for its various health benefits including pain management – especially for muscular pain. Yoga involves gentle movements that improve flexibility and strengthen back muscles.  Clinical trials demonstrate that yoga can significantly alleviate chronic back pain and improve quality of life (see study) With the proper guidance, one should incorporate poses like Cat Pose, Child’s Pose, and Downward Dog into your routine. Sun Salutation is also very effective.
