Natural Remedies for Arrhythmias (Evidence-Based)

Arrhythmias, also known as irregular heartbeats, are disruptions or abnormalities in the heart’s normal rhythm. They can range from harmless to life-threatening and often indicate an underlying cardiovascular or systemic issue. Understanding arrhythmias and heart conditions in general is imperative as these conditions are incredibly common. In this article, I share valuable information on symptoms, causes, and most importantly, evidence-based natural remedies for arrhythmias.

What Is an Arrhythmia?

An arrhythmia refers to any irregularity in the heartbeat, either too fast (tachycardia), too slow (bradycardia), or erratic (fibrillation or flutter). These changes in heart rhythm occur due to malfunctioning electrical signals and activity that regulate the heart’s pumping action and regulate its rhythm. Some arrhythmias may be asymptomatic, while others can lead to serious complications such as a stroke or cardiac arrest.

Causes of Arrhythmias

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Hypertension
  • Electrolyte imbalances (e.g., potassium, magnesium)
  • Heart valve disorders
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • Substance use (caffeine, alcohol, stimulants)
  • Medications (e.g., beta-agonists, decongestants)
  • Chronic stress
  • Anxiety
  • Sleep apnea

Types of Arrhythmias

  1. Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) – Irregular and often rapid heartbeat in the upper chambers.
  2. Atrial Flutter – Similar to AFib but more organized rhythm.
  3. Supraventricular Tachycardia (SVT) – Abnormal fast rhythms originating above the ventricles.
  4. Ventricular Tachycardia – Fast rhythm in the ventricles; may become life-threatening.
  5. Ventricular Fibrillation – Disorganized electrical activity. This is a medical emergency.
  6. Bradycardia – Unusually slow heart rate.
  7. Premature Beats – Extra beats that interrupt the normal rhythm.

Common Symptoms of Arrhythmias

  • Palpitations or fluttering sensation
  • Dizziness
  • Light-headedness
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain or discomfort
  • Fainting
  • Anxiety
  • Restlessness

How Are Arrhythmias Diagnosed?

A doctor or healthcare provider will can find the first sign of an irregular heartbeat by simply checking one’s pulse.

Afterward, an electrocardiogram (ECG/EKG) may be done. Depending on the results, further diagnostics may be done to find out what is causing the arrhythmia:

  • Event Recorder – Used for sporadic symptoms.
  • Echocardiogram – This is to check for structural issues
  • Electrophysiological Study (EPS) – Invasive test to locate arrhythmia origin.
  • Stress Testing – To evaluate symptoms on exertion.
  • Blood Tests – To rule out thyroid issues, electrolyte imbalances, or genetic issues.
  • Cardiac Catheterization – To check for blockages or the coronary arteries, etc

Conventional Treatment Options

  • Medications: Beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, antiarrhythmic drugs (e.g., amiodarone).
  • Catheter Ablation: Destroys the area of heart tissue causing abnormal rhythms.
  • Pacemaker or ICD (Implantable Cardioverter Defibrillator): For bradycardia or life-threatening arrhythmias.
  • Lifestyle Modifications: Avoiding stimulants, managing stress, and treating sleep apnea.

Natural Remedies for Arrhythmias

1. Magnesium

Magnesium plays a crucial role in stabilizing heart muscle cells, regulating blood pressure, and maintaining electrical balance. This mineral has been associated with improvements in blood pressure (see study) and low levels of magnesium is associated with an increased occurrence of sudden death due to cardiac causes (see study). In a meta-analysis of clinical trials, it was found that magnesium supplementation reduced the risk of postoperative atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery (see study).

Magnesium can be supplement as well as gotten from one’s diet from foods such as pumpkin seeds, avocados, and nuts.

2. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10)

CoQ10 is a common supplement that supports mitochondrial function and enhances energy production in heart cells. It is technically a nutrient that is vital for health, especially heart health. In fact, statins – a common group of medicines used for cholesterol management, are known to reduce CoQ10 levels in the body. Therefore, supplementing with CoQ10 may be essential for patients taking these medications. When it comes to its effect on arrhythmias, a randomized controlled trial showed that CoQ10 supplementation  reduced the incidence of atrial fibrillation in patients with heart failure (see study).

3. Omega-3 Fatty Acids (EPA/DHA)

These anti-inflammatory compounds are known to support cardiovascular health as well as possess various other health benefits related to inflammatory, neurological, and psychiatric conditions. Studies have shown that omega-3 supplementation reduced the risk of sudden cardiac death and arrhythmias post-myocardial infarction (see study).

4. Hawthorn (Crataegus oxyacantha)

Hawthorn Berries are one of the most commonly used natural remedies for arrhythmias as they extremely well studied for their benefits related to cardiovascular health. They have been found to improve blood pressure, circulation, and to increase left ventricular ejection fracture in patients with heart failure. In one study it was found that hawthorn intake was associated with a lower incidence of atrial fibrillation, tachycardia, and other types of arrhythmia (see study).

5. L-Carnitine

L-Carnitine is an amino acid that is commonly used for weight loss, muscle building, energy, and certain neurological conditions. It supports fatty acid metabolism in heart muscle cells and has demonstrated significant benefits for heart patients. In one study, L-carnitine supplementation was found to reduce ventricular arrhythmias in patients with acute myocardial infarction (see study).
